How to Help Your Child With Counting Money
My second grader emptied his piggy bank onto the rug, sorted out the shiniest coins, and announced he was rich because he had eight nickels and only two dimes, and the nickels were bigger. I asked him to count it up. He lined up the nickels first, called them ten cents each because they were the big ones, and got to eighty before I even mentioned the dimes. He was not being careless. He was reasoning exactly the way the world had taught him everywhere else: the bigger thing is worth more. With coins, that rule is a trap.
If your child freezes over a handful of change, insists a nickel beats a dime, or counts the same pile three times and gets three different totals, here is the short version: counting money is not really about money. It is skip counting your child already knows, wrapped around four values they have to memorize because those values do not follow from size or anything else. Once the four values are solid and the skip counting is smooth, the handful of change stops being a puzzle. Here is how we got there at our kitchen table.
How to help my child with counting money
To help your child with counting money, you separate the job into two parts and teach them in order. First, the four coin values, learned flat as facts: a penny is 1 cent, a nickel is 5 cents, a dime is 10 cents, a quarter is 25 cents. There is no reasoning your way to these from how the coins look, so do not try, just make them automatic. Second, the counting itself, which is nothing more than skip counting by fives, tens, and twenty-fives that your child has done since first grade. Sort a mixed handful into piles, count from the largest value down, and keep a running total. Values first, counting second. Do it in that order and the guessing stops.
Why counting money is harder than it looks
Here is the trap grownups forget. Every other size comparison in a child's life is honest. The bigger cookie is more cookie, the taller glass holds more juice, the longer line has more people. Then coins show up and quietly break the rule: the dime is the smallest coin in the drawer and it is worth twice the fatter nickel. Nothing about the metal tells you that. The value is a convention, a thing people agreed on, and a child who has spent years correctly assuming bigger means more has no reason to expect the exception.
Watch what happened with my son and his nickels. He was not bad at counting, he counted to eighty just fine. He had simply attached the wrong number to the coin, ten instead of five, because ten felt right for the bigger piece. That is the signature of the money struggle: the arithmetic is often fine, and the mistake is upstream, in what each coin is worth. Which is good news, because it tells you where to aim.
Start with the four coins and skip counting
Before any counting, lock in the four values, and name the weird one out loud so it sticks.
- Say the values as a set. Penny 1, nickel 5, dime 10, quarter 25. Hold each coin, say its name and value, and hand it to your child to say back. Ten seconds, a few times a day.
- Confront the dime.Put the dime and nickel side by side. "This little one is worth more. I know, it is strange." Let the oddness be the hook. The coin that breaks the rule is the one worth extra reps.
- Connect each coin to a skip count. Nickels are counting by fives, dimes are counting by tens, quarters go 25, 50, 75, 100. Your child already knows these chants. You are just telling them which coin each one belongs to.
If the skip counting itself is shaky, stop and fix that first. A child who cannot count by fives cannot count a pile of nickels, and no amount of money practice will paper over the gap. This is why place value and skip counting are the real foundation under coins.
Count mixed coins from largest to smallest
Once the values are automatic, counting a handful is a routine, and the order matters more than parents expect.
- Sort into piles. Quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies. Physically separating them turns one hard problem into four easy ones.
- Count on from the biggest. Start with the quarters, 25, 50, 75, hold that total, then keep going through the dimes, the nickels, and the pennies last. Two quarters, three dimes, one nickel: 25, 50, 60, 70, 80, 85. Done.
- Say the running total out loud. At first, count together so you can hear the exact moment a number slips. Silent counting hides the mistake until the end.
The classic failure is starting with pennies or hopping between piles at random, which forces a pile of tiny re-additions and loses the thread. Largest to smallest keeps the total climbing in smooth, familiar jumps. This is the same "count on from the big number" habit that makes addition fluent, just applied to coins.
Teach making change by counting up
Making change is where money starts to feel like real math, and it is also where a lot of kids get pushed into subtraction they are not ready for. You do not need it. Change is counting up.
Say a snack costs 75 cents and your child pays with a dollar. Do not set up 100 minus 75 and start borrowing. Start at 75 and climb to 100: "five more makes 80, then twenty more makes a hundred." The change is 5 plus 20, which is 25 cents. That is exactly how a cashier counts coins back into your hand, it keeps the numbers friendly, and it sidesteps the borrowing that trips kids up in written subtraction. When your child is ready for the written version later, they will already understand what the answer means.
The best practice ground is a pretend store. Price a few pantry items, hand your child a bowl of coins, and take turns being the customer. Let them ring you up and count the change back up to what you paid. It is real, it is low stakes, and it turns an abstract skill into something they watch a grownup actually use.
Practice without turning it into a fight
Here is where parents, me included, get it wrong. Handing a child a worksheet of mixed-coin totals before the four values are automatic does real damage. They guess a coin's worth, get a red mark, guess again, and the lesson that sticks is that money math is a coin flip with a grade attached. Fluency should grow out of the values, not get forced ahead of them.
So keep the reps short and real:
- Flash the coins. Hold one up, your child fires back the value. Penny 1, quarter 25. Ten seconds, a few rounds. You are drilling values, not word problems.
- Count the change in your pocket at the door, or the coins in the car cup holder at a red light. A real handful, counted largest to smallest, beats a page of clip art.
- Keep sessions to five minutes. Two short reps a day beats one long grind, and it does not sour the whole subject.
When your child gets one wrong, you do not have to supply the answer. Ask, "which coin is that, and what is it worth?" and their reply tells you exactly which piece slipped. Figure out where the gap really is
The nice thing about counting money out loud is that a miss tells you where the gap sits. If your child still reasons from coin size, the four values have not set, so go back to flashing them before anything else. If the values are solid but a pile of nickels stalls, the skip counting is the fix, and it is worth practicing on its own. If both are fine but the running total drifts on big handfuls, that is a place value and addition-fluency issue, not a money issue. Different gaps, different fixes, and you can only tell them apart by watching the reasoning, not the final number.
Money also grows up with your child. Second grade formalizes counting mixed coins and dollars and using the dollar and cent symbols (CCSS 2.MD.C.8), and fourth grade folds money into decimal word problems (CCSS 4.MD.A.2), where three dollars and five cents becomes 3.05. So the coin skills you build now are the ground that later decimal money problems stand on.
