How to Help Your Child With Place Value

My son could count to a hundred before he started kindergarten, so I assumed the number stuff was handled. Then in second grade he wrote "two hundred five" as 2005, looked at it, and saw nothing wrong. To him the number was a list of words to turn into digits: two hundred, then five, written down in the order he heard them. Nobody had ever shown him that the 2 and the 5 live in specific spots, and that the spot is the whole point.

If your child scrambles digits, freezes on carrying and borrowing, or cannot tell you whether 89 or 91 is bigger without counting, you are almost certainly looking at a place-value gap. It is one of the quietest soft spots in early math, because a kid can look fluent, rattling off numbers and even adding small ones, while the idea underneath never actually set. Here is what got our kitchen table unstuck.

How to help my child with place value

Place value is not a list of columns to memorize. It is one idea: where a digit sits decides how much it is worth. The 3 in 30 means three tens, and the 3 in 300 means three hundreds, even though it is the same little symbol. To help, you go in order. First make sure your child can group real objects into tens and see that 34 is three bundles of ten and four singles, not just "a 3 and a 4." Then connect that to how the number is written, so the tens spot counts the bundles and the ones spot counts the singles. Only after that do you lean on place-value charts and expanded form. Meaning first, notation second. Do it in that order and place value stops being a set of rules to follow and becomes something your child can see.

Why place value feels invisible

Counting hides the problem. A child who chants "twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three" sounds like they understand those numbers, but reciting a sequence is not the same as knowing that 23 is two tens and three ones. The digits get treated as separate characters, the way we read a phone number, and for a while that works fine. Small single-digit math does not expose the gap.

Then the numbers get bigger and everything that depends on place value starts to buckle at once. Carrying in addition, borrowing in subtraction, lining up columns, rounding, reading four-digit numbers aloud: all of it assumes the child knows that moving one spot to the left means ten times as much. The Common Core standards build this on purpose and slowly. Kids break the teen numbers into tens and ones in kindergarten, add the hundreds in second grade, and only in fourth grade formally learn that a digit is worth ten times the same digit one place to its right. The idea is meant to deepen for years. When a child skips straight to the written procedures without the grouping underneath, there is nothing holding the columns together.

Start with bundling, not the chart

The fastest fix is to make "ten" a thing your child can hold. You want them to physically group objects and feel a bundle of ten become one unit:

  • Bundle real objects.Pour out a pile of dry pasta or craft sticks and have your child gather them into groups of ten, each held together with a rubber band. Count 34: three bundles and four loose. Now the "3" in the tens spot means something they built.
  • Use money.Ten pennies trade for a dime, ten dimes for a dollar. This is place value your child already handles in real life, and the trade of "ten of these for one of those" is right there in their hand.
  • Say numbers in expanded form. Out loud, together: 234 is 200 plus 30 plus 4. Hearing the number pulled apart into the value of each digit is what wires the spots to real amounts.

The phrase to keep saying is ten of these makes one of those. A child who can tell you that 40 is four bundles of ten owns something a child who only memorized column names does not: a picture that tells them whether an answer even makes sense.

Carrying and borrowing are just trading

Here is where place value pays off, and it is the single most useful thing to teach. Carrying and borrowing are not magic moves you do to the digits. They are trades. When you add 27 and 5 and the ones column spills past ten, you are bundling ten ones into one new ten and moving it over. That is all "carry the one" means: you made a bundle. Borrowing is the same trade run backward. To subtract from 42 when the ones are too small, you unbundle one of the four tens back into ten ones so you have enough to work with.

Show it with the bundled sticks and the mystery drains out of it. A child who sees carrying as trading ten ones for a ten can rebuild the step if they forget it. A child who only memorized "write the 2, carry the 1" has nothing to fall back on when a step slips. This same build-it-from-meaning habit is what makes later math hold together, which is why place value feeds so directly into multiplication, where multiplying by 10 and lining up partial products is pure place value in action.

Do not skip past the zero

The zero is where a lot of kids quietly get lost, because it looks like it means "nothing" and so they treat it as safe to ignore. But in 305 the zero is doing real work: it holds the tens spot open so the 3 lands in the hundreds and the 5 lands in the ones. Drop it and you get 35, a completely different number. Naming the zero as a placeholder, a spot-saver that keeps the other digits where they belong, clears up a surprising amount of confusion. Have your child read numbers like 405, 730, and 600 aloud and tell you what each digit is worth, zero included. "Four hundreds, zero tens, five ones." The zero is not empty. It is a job.

Practice without turning it into a fight

Here is the part parents get wrong most, and I include myself. Drilling place-value worksheets before the grouping is solid does real damage. A page of columns a child cannot picture does not teach place value, it teaches that math is a thing that makes your stomach hurt, and that lesson sticks for years. Fluency should grow out of understanding, not be forced ahead of it.

So keep the reps short, real, and frequent:

  • Count real collections by bundling into tens: a jar of buttons, a handful of coins, the crayons in the bin.
  • Play "what is that digit worth." Point at the 7 in 4,725 and ask what it is really worth. Seven hundreds. Then the 2, the 4.
  • Keep sessions to five minutes. Two short reps a day beats one long grind, and it does not sour the whole subject.

When your child gets one wrong, you do not have to jump in with the answer. Ask, "how could you figure it out?" and their reply tells you exactly which piece slipped: the meaning of grouping by ten, the job of the zero, or the trade behind carrying. That is the growth-mindset move, and it is the same one I lean on with fractions, where place value shows up again the moment decimals arrive. Figure out where the gap really is

The nice thing about building place value from the ground up is that a miss tells you where the gap is. If your child cannot show you what 34 means with bundled objects in front of them, the idea of grouping by ten has not set yet. If they get the grouping but write "three hundred five" as 3005, the zero-as-placeholder idea needs work. If they understand both but lose the thread while carrying, it is the trade that needs practice. Different gaps, different fixes, and you can only tell them apart by watching the reasoning.

It is also worth getting an outside read now and then, because a single homework sheet is a small, noisy sample. Because place value sits under multi-digit addition, subtraction, multiplication, rounding, and every decimal that comes later, an unaddressed gap here tends to quietly widen. That is worth catching early.
