STAR Math Test Scores, Explained for Parents
My daughter came home with a STAR Math printout, and it was the opposite of the tests I remembered. Not one number, but a whole row of them: a scaled score, a percentile, a grade equivalent, something called an SGP. It read like the back of a cereal box, all figures and no sentence telling me what to do with them. I stood at the counter trying to decide whether to be proud, worried, or just confused, which is a lot to ask of a piece of paper with no explanation attached.
If your child took the STAR Math test and brought home a report that raised more questions than it answered, this is the plain-English version I went looking for. The good news is that once you know which number does which job, the report gets a lot calmer to read.
STAR Math test scores explained
STAR Math is a computer-adaptive assessment from Renaissance, given to students from kindergarten through high school. It is short, usually about 20 to 30 minutes, and it adapts as your child works: a right answer brings a slightly harder question, a wrong one eases off, until the test homes in on the level your child can actually sustain. Under the hood it is sampling across number sense, algebra, geometry and measurement, and data, then turning all of that into a handful of scores.
That handful is where the confusion lives, because the numbers are not interchangeable. Some tell you the level your child reached, one tells you where they stand next to other kids, and one is a comparison so easy to misread that it trips up parents and teachers alike. Let us take them one at a time, starting with the big one at the top of the report.
The scaled score: a position, not a grade
The scaled score is the foundational number. STAR Math places it on one continuous scale, roughly 0 to 1400, that runs unbroken across every grade from kindergarten to twelfth. Think of it like a height mark on a doorframe. The mark records how high your child reached, but the mark alone does not tell you whether that is tall "for a third grader." It just records the level.
This is the same trap parents fall into with other tests, so it is worth saying plainly. A scaled score is not a percentage correct. A 700 does not mean 700 points, 700 questions, or 70 percent of anything. It is also not a grade level: a scaled score of 500 has nothing to do with being "at a fifth-grade level." It is a spot on a difficulty ruler, and because the ruler spans all grades, the same number means very different things at different ages. Its real value shows up later, when you have two of them from different testing windows and can watch the second one sit higher than the first.
The percentile rank: the number that tells you where your child stands
Here is the move that turns the report from a riddle into something useful. Next to the scaled score sits a percentile rank, a number from 1 to 99, and that is the one you actually want. The percentile compares your child to a national sample of students in the same grade. The 50th percentile is dead center, squarely on grade level. The 80th means your child scored higher than about 80 percent of that sample. The 20th means the opposite.
The scaled score tells you the level. The percentile tells you whether that level is ahead, on track, or behind for your child's grade. If you only have ten seconds to read the report, read the percentile. It is the closest thing on the page to the sentence the printout forgot to include. The grade equivalent: the score parents misread most
The grade equivalent, or GE, is the number that causes the most quiet panic and the most false comfort, usually for the same reason. It is written like 4.5, which reads like a grade and a half and sounds like a placement. It is not. A GE of 4.5 means your child scored the same on this test as a typical fourth-grader in the fifth month of the school year would have. That is all it means.
So if your second-grader comes home with a GE of 4.5, it does not mean they are ready for fourth-grade math or should skip ahead. It means they did unusually well on second-grade-level material, well enough to match what an average fourth-grader scores on their version of the test. The comparison also gets shaky the further it lands from your child's real grade, because the test did not actually ask a second-grader fourth-grade questions. Treat the grade equivalent as loose context, and let the percentile be the number you trust.
Growth: one score is a snapshot, the line is the story
The reason the scaled score rides on one unbroken scale is so schools can line up this fall's number against last fall's and literally see the growth. That is also why the report often includes a Student Growth Percentile, or SGP: it compares how much your child grew to how much other kids who started at the same score grew. A high SGP means strong progress even if the raw score is still catching up, which is a fairer, more encouraging read than the scaled score alone.
The catch is timing. Schools give STAR Math two or three times a year, months apart, and you see only the windows they choose to share. If the fall test flags a soft spot in fractions, you might not get another data point until winter. That is a long stretch to either worry about a dip or coast on a good number, with no way to check whether the extra practice at the kitchen table is actually moving anything.
A STAR Math report is built for a school tracking a whole class a few times a year. It is not built to sit in a parent's pocket and answer "how is she doing right now."
How to keep your own read between school reports
