My son was doing a page of two-digit multiplication, the kind where you have to hold a few things in your head at once, and he kept stalling in the middle. Not on the method. He knew the method. He'd get halfway through and hit a spot where he needed 6 times 7, and I could watch him stop, stare at the ceiling, and count it out under his breath. By the time he had 42, he'd lost his place in the bigger problem and had to start the column over. He wasn't bad at multiplication. He was spending all his fuel on a fact that should have been free.

That stall has a name, and it's the thing to work on: fact fluency. Math fact fluency is recalling basic facts quickly, accurately, and without much effort, so your child's attention is free for the actual problem. The best way to build it at home isn't cold flashcards and a stopwatch. It's short, daily, strategy-based practice that grows new facts out of the ones your child already owns. Keep the sessions short and spaced out. Five minutes a day, most days, beats a long grind on Sunday, because spacing practice across days is one of the most reliable findings in learning research.
