How to Help Your Child Make Inferences When Reading

My daughter could answer any question whose answer was sitting right there on the page. "What did the fox take?" Instant. But the moment her teacher asked, "Why do you think the fox did that?" she'd go quiet, then offer something random, then look at me like I'd asked her to read my mind. For a while I decided she just wasn't paying attention. She was. She'd walked straight into the wall almost every reader hits eventually: inference, the skill of figuring out what the author meant but never actually said.

Here's what took me too long to understand. Once books move past simple picture-book plots, most of the meaning stops being stated outright. The author starts trusting you to connect two sentences, catch a character's tone, and notice what was deliberately left unsaid. That connecting work is inference, and it sits right on top of the vocabulary and language comprehension a child brings to the page. You can't hear it happening, which is exactly why a gap there hides for so long behind smooth, confident reading.

How to help my child make inferences when reading

The good news is that inference responds well to ordinary practice, as long as the practice is the right shape. You are not trying to drill a procedure. You're trying to make a normally invisible thought process visible, and then slowly hand it over. The three moves below do that. Pick one, use it for a couple of weeks, and watch how your child's answers change.

Make the invisible thinking visible

The single most useful thing I did was narrate my own inferences out loud. When we read together and a line said the character "shoved the letter in her pocket and looked away," I'd stop and think on the record: "Hmm. She hid the letter and wouldn't look at anyone. I bet it's bad news she doesn't want to share." I wasn't testing my daughter. I was showing her the two-step nobody had shown her: notice the clue, then build a guess from it.

Kids assume good readers just magically know what a story means. They don't. They're running a hundred tiny inferences a page, and it feels automatic only because it's silent. When you say yours out loud, you turn a mysterious talent into a copyable habit. After a week of hearing me do it, my daughter started beating me to it, blurting her own theory before I could finish mine. That's the whole goal: the thinking moves from my mouth to her head.

Ask the questions the page won't answer

Most of the questions we ask kids about reading have their answers printed in the text. Those check decoding, not understanding. Inference lives in the other kind of question, the one the author left open: "Why do you think he did that?" "How is she feeling, and how can you tell?" "What do you think happens after the last page?" None of those have a sentence you can point to and copy. They force a reader to combine the clues with what they already know about people.

There's one follow-up that does more work than any other, and it's free: "What makes you think that?" It's the line between a guess and a real inference. A guess comes from nowhere. An inference can be defended by pointing back at the page. When my daughter said a character was nervous, I'd ask what tipped her off, and she'd find "her hands were shaking." That habit, always tracing a conclusion back to its evidence, is most of what teachers mean when they say a child needs to work on inference.

Practice it off the page, too

Inference isn't only a reading skill, it's a life skill that happens to show up in books, and that's great news because you can rehearse it without a single worksheet. Pause a movie on a character's face and ask what they're feeling and how you can tell. Point at the wet umbrella someone left by the door and ask what probably happened outside. Read a friend's short text out loud and wonder together whether they sounded excited or annoyed.

These low-stakes moments teach the exact same muscle: take the visible clues, add what you already know about the world, and reach a conclusion nobody handed you. Kids who are shaky on inference in books are often shaky because they've never been asked to name the reasoning they do all day without thinking. Making it explicit in front of a paused TV transfers straight back to the page.

Find out if inference is really the gap

Here's the honest catch. "Work on inference" only helps if inference is actually the problem. Sometimes a child stumbles on those "why" questions because the real bottleneck is underneath: they're still spending so much effort decoding that there's nothing left for thinking, or they're missing the vocabulary and background knowledge the passage assumes. The same blank stare can come from three different places, and each one needs a different fix.
